Avus in this case means "ancestor," rather than "bird," which would be avis. This would make the name "Jaeckel's ancestor of hollow-tailed lizards," where it was (erroneously) believed to give rise to the bird-like coelurosaurs. In this case it would be "Jaeckel's ancestor of Coelurosauria."
